MEDIA ADVISORY: Press Conference to Launch Report on ‘Health Impact Assessment of the North Houston Highway Improvement Project (NHHIP)’

HOUSTON, TX – (June 11, 2019) – Air Alliance Houston and partners will host a press conference to release a new Health Impact Assessment (HIA) report of the North Houston Highway Improvement Project (NHHIP) – a large-scale, $10 billion freeway widening plan put forth by the Texas Department of Transportation as a means to manage congestion along the I-45 corridor.

The HIA, led by Air Alliance Houston, looks at the NHHIP’s potential health effects to local communities, specifically those impacting school-aged children and their families that live, work, and go to school nearby the I-45 corridor. The HIA aims to help inform decision-makers about the potential adverse health impacts of the project and, based on findings, proposes design features that would better protect community health broadly and children’s health at the priority campuses more specifically.

The press conference will take place at 9 a.m. on Thursday, June 13, on the front steps of Houston’s City Hall. Following the event, at 10 a.m., the City Council’s Transportation, Technology, and Infrastructure Committee will convene for a special called public meeting on the NHHIP at the Council Chambers.

  • Bakeyah Nelson, Ph.D., Executive Director, Air Alliance Houston
  • Oni Blair, Executive Director, LINK Houston
  • Johnny N. Mata, Presiding Officer, Greater Houston Coalition for Justice
