Rally to Oppose HR 702

Date: Thu, 08/20/2015
Location: 1 Shell Plaza, 910 Louisiana Street, Houston, TX 77002

Join us at a rally to oppose House Resolution 702, which would lift the ban on export of crude oil.

WHEN: Thursday, August 20 at 10:00 AM.

WHERE: One Shell Plaza, 910 Louisiana Street, Houston, TX 77002

WHY: Rally to protest HR 702. Say “NO!” to corporate greed and “YES” to American energy independence!

H.R. 702 amends the Energy Policy and Conservation Act to repeal authority to restrict the export of: (1) coal, petroleum products, natural gas, or petrochemical feedstocks; and (2) supplies of materials or equipment necessary to maintain or further exploration, production, refining, or transportation of energy supplies, or for the construction or maintenance of energy facilities within the United States.

The Energy Policy and Conservation Act of 1975 was signed into law by President Jimmy Carter after the 1973 oil crisis threatened energy security in the United States. Forty years later, the U.S. is poised to become the world’s top energy producer, surpassing Russia and Saudi Arabia.

H.R. 702 is a step in the wrong direction, away from domestic energy independence. H.R. 702 would prohibit any federal official from imposing or enforcing any restriction on the export of crude oil.

The rally and protest was organized by Hilton Kelley, winner of the 2011 Goldman Environmental Prize and founder and CEO of the Community In-Power and Development Association in Port Arthur, Texas. Mr. Kelley explains the need for the rally to oppose H.R. 702:

“Exporting U.S. oil to foreign countries for refining will only put more lives in danger and contribute more CO2 emission to the environment which will increase the negative impacts of climate change due to a serious lack of regulation and oversight in other countries.

“The Oil and Gas industries have sought ways to hire cheap labor and circumvent U.S. regulation for years. These regulation help protect the health of American citizen our environment and the very air and water we need to sustain life. If H.R. 702 or the ‘Energy Policy Modernization Act of 2015’ passes the U.S. Senate, they may succeed. Thousands of Oil and Gas union workers could loss their jobs due to U.S. oil exportation to unregulated countries

“The best storage for crude is underground. H.R. 702 is bad for our future, bad for our environment, and bad for U.S. jobs.”
