Air Alliance Houston has been busy working to raise awareness about the air quality threats during and post-Harvey. Our efforts in partnership with Environmental Defense Fund helped to garner media attention about the damaged Valero tank that released benzene in the Manchester community exposing residents to very high concentrations of benzene.
Due to our collective efforts, the EPA has since stated that Valero underreported their benzene emissions and has launched an investigation. Moving forward, we will continue to work with TCEQ and EPA to ensure they make the public aware of potential air quality issues and hold facilities accountable. You can read more about our work in the articles from ProPublica and the Houston Chronicle.
