EPA hội thảo trên Web: Ethylene Oxide 101

Join the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Region 6 on May 20th @ 6:30 p.m. for a webinar about ethylene oxide and its health effects. Please find information on how to attend the Webinar below.

Why is this important?

Ethylene oxide is a colorless, flammable gas used to sterilize medical equipment and make a range of products, including plastics. Breathing air contaminated with this chemical can increase your risk of breast cancer and various lymphoid cancers. In their most recent published study from 2016, the EPA concluded that ethylene oxide is in fact 30 times more carcinogenic than they had previously thought. Texas accounts for nearly half the entire country’s ethylene oxide output, with at least 27 facilities emitting more than 48 tons of the health-harming chemical every year

As part of a renewed commitment to transparency and environmental justice among federal agencies, the EPA Region 6 – covering Texas, Louisiana, New Mexico, Oklahoma, and Arkansas – is taking long overdue action to review regulations around this unsafe pollutant and to reach out to at-risk communities.

This webinar is the first step in the process to inform the public about ethylene oxide – this includes its uses, how it is managed, associated risks and what the EPA is doing to mitigate those risks. Specific facilities or communities, specific controls, or state-specific issues will not be discussed at this time, but those concerns are expected to be the focus of subsequent meetings planned for later this summer.

We stress the importance of your attendance in learning more about how this chemical is affecting our region and how to get involved in the next steps as the EPA addresses impacts to specific areas. Residents of East Harris County are strongly encouraged by AAH to participate, because of physical proximity to industrial facilities. Please find the meeting details below.
