Port Houston and Army Corps of Engineers are about to begin a billion-dollar, multiyear expansion (deepening and widening) of the Houston Ship Channel – known as “Project 11.” Port Houston Commissioners recently passed the budget for the first segment (Segment 1A) of the project.

Construction will begin closer to the beginning of 2022, but the whole project (consisting of 6 Segments) will continue beyond that. This town hall is created with the understanding that this is a long term project which should be watched with keeping the health and wellbeing of port communities and Houstonians in mind.

Please join the Healthy Port Communities Coalition’s town hall and learn how you can get involved.

The current situation…

  • First up, some good news! In the second week of October, after reading Air Alliance Houston’s newsletter (Not subscribed? Stay up to date!), Port Houston called a special meeting to prove that they are willing to listen to advocacy by the Healthy Port Communities Coalition partners. At the meeting, after listening to our testimony, Commissioners approved a contract to dredge the first segment of the Ship Channel expansion using equipment with cleaner engines.
