Air Alliance Houston Launches Permanent Community Air Monitoring Network in Third Ward and EaDo Ahead of FIFA World Cup 2026™

Houston, Texas —  Air Alliance Houston, in partnership with the FIFA World Cup 2026™ Houston Host Committee, is launching a permanent community air monitoring network along the Columbia Tap Trail as part of Houston’s sustainability planning for the seven matches the city will host in 2026.

The network will include seventeen permanent air quality monitors along the four-mile corridor connecting EaDo, Third Ward, and State Highway 288. Developed with residents, local businesses, and neighborhood organizations, the project is designed to strengthen public health, environmental transparency, and community access to real-time air quality data well beyond the tournament.

Unlike many event-driven infrastructure investments that end after the final whistle, these monitors will remain in place permanently, creating a lasting environmental health resource for the communities that live, work, learn, and play in the area every day.

“This project reflects what responsible global event planning should look like—investments that leave communities stronger than they were before,” said Juan Flores, Director of Programs at Air Alliance Houston. “As Houston prepares for FIFA World Cup 2026, we have an opportunity to ensure the benefits of hosting extend beyond stadium walls and into the neighborhoods that make this city vibrant. This air monitoring network is a legacy investment in public health, transparency, and environmental justice.”

The monitors will collect real-time air quality data to help residents better understand pollution trends in their neighborhoods, support public health awareness, and inform future advocacy and policy decisions. The Columbia Tap corridor was selected for its importance as a key connector between neighborhoods, recreation spaces, transportation corridors, and communities historically impacted by air pollution.

By centering community needs in the planning process, the project demonstrates how large-scale international events can contribute to neighborhood resilience and public benefit when local stakeholders help shape the legacy.

“We’re proud to support Air Alliance Houston’s leadership in creating a sustainability initiative with long-term community impact,” said Elizabeth Carlson, Chair, Sustainability Committee of the FIFA World Cup 2026™ Houston Host Committee. “This partnership reflects our commitment to ensuring Houston’s FIFA World Cup preparations deliver meaningful benefits for residents now and for years to come.”

Air Alliance Houston will continue working alongside community partners throughout the rollout of the network to ensure residents can access, understand, and use the data generated by the monitors.
