Air Alliance Houston Statement on Today’s Prop B Vote at the H-GAC Transportation Policy Council

Statement from Jennifer Hadayia, Executive Director, Air Alliance Houston

“Today, the Transportation Policy Council (TPC) of Houston-Galveston Area Council (H-GAC) rejected the will of Houston voters to have fair representation in the decisions that directly affect their health and quality of life. This vote demonstrates the very issue that Prop B sought to address: there is an unbalanced system that pits the urban core against the surrounding region.

“Houstonians have borne the brunt of harmful transportation policy decisions from TPC like continuous highway expansions that increase concrete heat islands and tailpipe emissions. We are simply asking to have a seat at the table when these decisions are being made.

“Houston representatives put forth a reasonable proposal today that would extend the time to work on a bylaws adjustment, and they were shot down. We commend the Houston and Harris County delegation who protected the health, quality of life, and democratic will of all Houstonians today.

“This is not the end of the road for proportional representation on TPC or H-GAC. Together with our partners, Air Alliance Houston will continue to work for the good of Houstonians.”
