At last month’s Transportation Policy Council (TPC) meeting, TPC members requested staff provide an update on Texas Department of Transportation’s (TxDOT) North Houston Highway Improvement Project (NHHIP), the $9 billion I-45 expansion through downtown and north Houston.
This is a chance to give them the people’s update on the project.
We are advocating for a better version of this project – one that takes our environment and community safety into account. Join us in providing public comments at the May 20 TPC meeting.

Since working in coalition with other community and advocacy groups to successfully pause the I-45 expansion, the public sentiment is turning, with national and international coverage on the inequitable nature of this project and its harm.
In April, we took it to TxDOT to show our solidarity against highway expansions and our support for safe streets in all Texas cities and suburbs.
We are asking the Houston-Galveston Area Council’s (HGAC) TPC to join us in a bold, brave new future and move away from supporting TxDOT’s project as it currently stands. Make Houston the poster child for a transformational project that meets our climate and safety goals, not another failed project like the Katy Freeway. Improved health outcomes and resident needs and desires in affected neighborhoods should be at the center of the project’s goals and outcomes, not increased air pollution and harm to children’s health.
For $9 billion, Houston area taxpayers deserve a far better project.
Our diversity of perspectives gives us strength. Join us and our partners and provide your comments in bold red at the May 20 TPC meeting to give them our update: we aren’t going anywhere. The longer TxDOT continues to push this project through, the more organized we will become.
