PRESS RELEASE: State of the Air Gala to bring together Houston’s advocates to help advance the cause of clean air and environmental justice
HOUSTON (March 25, 2019): Air Alliance Houston (AHH) will host its second annual State of the Air Gala on Thursday, April 4, 2019, at the historical Buffalo Soldiers Museum. The State of the Air Gala will raise funds and awareness to support the organization’s mission: to deliver clean air for a healthy future in Houston through applied research, education and advocacy.
“The State of the Air is a wonderful opportunity to showcase this dynamic organization that has so tirelessly been working to improve air quality in the Houston region for decades,” Mustapha Beydoun, Air Alliance Houston Board Member and Vice President of the Houston Advanced Research Center (HARC) said. “The leaders at Air Alliance Houston are passionately advocating for clean air in the community and engaging residents, through their underlying belief that everyone has a right to breath clean air every day.“
This year, Air Alliance Houston is proud to feature keynote speaker Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo, who will tell attendees about the region’s air quality challenges and initiatives. Guests will hear firsthand about the steps the county is taking to improve our air and protect community health. Guests will also hear from Air Alliance Houston’s Executive Director Bakeyah Nelson on the organization’s current projects and priorities to advance clean air and environmental justice in Houston and beyond.
“With the current health and safety concerns raised by the recent fire at the ITC Dear Park facility and the accompanying air pollution, our work is extremely vital as these major chemical incidents are far too frequent. By attending the State of the Air Gala, you are joining with us to advocate for clean air and stronger policies,” Dr. Nelson said.
“The team at Air Alliance Houston has been the leading force in our region pushing back each and every day against polluters,” stated Ginny Goldman, 2019 State of the Air Event Chair. “Join us in supporting and honoring this courageous organization, our city and our communities need their leadership now more than ever.”
In addition, the Gala will recognize Air Alliance Houston’s High School Essay Contest winner, who will share their vision of how local leaders should be addressing Houston’s air pollution issue. Proceeds of the event will support Air Alliance Houston’s work to advance the public health of our communities by improving air quality. The Gala takes place during National Public Health Week 2019.
