Rock and concrete crushers increase risk of asthma flare-ups, heart attacks, and strokes. Emissions impact over 1,600 households, most of which are people of color
Fort Bend, TX – Air Alliance Houston and Rosharon for Clean Air, a local community group, will host an event and press conference on Saturday, February 21, to protest and raise awareness of air pollution threats posed by Julpit Inc.’s proposed rock and concrete crusher. Julpit Inc. is currently seeking its third permit from the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) to construct this facility at approximately 8830 FM 521 Road, Rosharon, Fort Bend County, Texas, 77583. Previous applications submitted by Julpit Inc. contained deficiencies that were identified through community and stakeholder review during the regulatory process. The event will be held at 444 Caldwell Ranch Blvd, Rosharon, TX 77583, in a community pavilion.
Rock and concrete crushing facilities emit particulate matter 2.5 (PM 2.5), carbon monoxide, volatile organic compounds, sulfur dioxide, and nitrogen oxides, along with noise and light pollution. PM 2.5 is dangerous due to the incredibly small size of the particles, which allows them to infiltrate the body, increasing the risk of asthma attacks, bronchitis, heart attacks, and strokes. These harmful pollutants could impact over 1,600 nearby households within a 1.5-mile radius, most of which are people of color.
Local residents will lead this rally to share concerns, provide information, and encourage informed public participation in the TCEQ review process. The gathering will also highlight that this is the company’s third application attempt and that prior filings required corrections following community and technical review.
